Jaša Koceli

 

Born in Celje, Slovenia. After finishing First High School in Celje he finished studies of sociology and theatre directing at the University of Ljubljana. He is often involved in the projects where he combine different text sources. He encourages new writings or writes his own texts.

 

In last 5 years he directed thirteen professional performances in several different slovenian theatres. In 2018 he directed first slovenian staging of The Trojan Women by Euripides in Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica. Premiere was on 12th April 2018. 


In 2017 he directed
 Little Queens by Eva Mahkovic in Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and his first opera Julka and Janez at the SNT Ballet and Opera Ljubljana. In 2016 he directed Pomona by Alistair McDowall in Slovenian National Theatre Drama and musical drama Nellie Goodbye by Lutz Hübner in Ljubljana Puppet Theatre.    

 

In Ljubljana City Theatre he directed two projects: performance based on dadaists texts Café Dada (2013) and the performance based on films by Jean-Luc Godard Breathless: Now (2014). In 2015 he directed iconic slovenian drama An event in the town of Goga by Slavko Grum in Anton Podbevšek Theater Novo mesto and staged intimate erotic fragment Lesbos in BiTeater. 

 

Professionally he debuted with the project about life and work of slovenian poet Miran Jarc titled No there is no shore in Glej Theatre in 2013. In the year 2014 he was chosen as a permanent resident artist in Glej Theatre, where he was exploring themes about european youth and urban culture in the project Silent city, a theatre trilogy of performances in five different languages: Me Me Me Me, To the bridge! and We are coming. 

 

As assistant director Jaša has cooperated in six institutional theatre performances with the acclaimed directors Dušan Jovanović, Janez Pipan, Ivica Buljan and Tomaž Pandur. 

 

As lighting designer he co-created three ballet performances: two in SNT Opera and Ballet Ljubljana (Symphony of sorrowful songs, 2017 and Heartmeat, 2015) and one in National Theatre in Belgrade (Dream Hunters, 2018).
